Is Topstep Legit? An Honest Topstep Review From Traders Who Read the Fine Print

Is Topstep legit? What you pay, what the rules really cost you, how payouts work and what Trustpilot and Reddit complaints are about, checked in 2026.

Is Topstep legit? Yes. Topstep has run futures evaluations since 2012, publishes its rules, prices and payout policy, and pays traders who meet them. Whether it is a good deal for you is a different question, and that one depends on how well you handle a trailing drawdown and a $150-a-day payout rule. This review covers what you pay, the rules that decide whether you ever get paid, and which complaints in Topstep reviews hold up.

Facts as of September 30, 2026, from Topstep's own pricing and payout policy pages and its Trustpilot profile. MyTradingBuddy is not affiliated with Topstep and earns nothing if you sign up.

Is Topstep legit? The short answer

Topstep is a real business with a long record: a company that sells evaluations, then pays out of a funded account when traders meet written rules. The payout policy is public, with exact caps, fees and processing times. Thousands of traders report being paid.

What it is not: a job, a guaranteed income, or a live account from day one. The Trading Combine and the Express Funded Account are simulated. You pay a monthly fee to take the evaluation, and most people who pay never reach a payout. That is true of every futures prop firm, and it is the context behind the harshest reviews.

So the useful questions are what it costs, and whether its rules fit how you trade.

What Topstep costs: Combine prices and the activation fee

Topstep sells the Trading Combine as a monthly subscription, on two pricing paths. This is Topstep pricing from its help center:

AccountStandard path (per month)No-activation-fee path (per month)
50K$49$95
100K$99$149
150K$199$229

On the standard path, the Topstep activation fee is $149, charged once for each Express Funded Account you earn. On the other path there is no activation fee, but you pay more every month. A reset costs the same as a month of your path. Level 2 market data is $38 a month extra.

The math on a 50K: pass within three months and the no-fee path is cheaper ($95 × 3 = $285 against $49 × 3 + $149 = $296). From the fourth month the standard path wins ($345 against $380), and the gap grows by $46 a month. Quick passers should pick no-fee; everyone else, standard.

The rules that decide whether you ever get paid

Topstep's rulebook is short, but three rules do the damage:

  • Maximum Loss Limit. $2,000 on a 50K, $3,000 on a 100K, $4,500 on a 150K. It trails your highest end-of-day balance but is monitored in real time, including open trades, so an intraday dip through it ends the account even if the day would have recovered.
  • Position size. The Combine allows 5, 10 or 15 minis by account size. The funded account starts smaller: a 50K Express Funded Account allows 2 until its balance grows, under the Topstep scaling plan.
  • Consistency. On the Combine, the best day should stay below 55% of the profit target, or Topstep raises the Consistency Target. On a 50K that is $1,650. One funded payout path uses a 40% cap instead. The mechanics are in prop firm consistency rule explained.

Trading plan discipline matters more than strategy here. A trader who sizes for $150 to $400 days rarely touches the Maximum Loss Limit.

How Topstep payouts work

On the standard path, an Express Funded Account pays after 5 winning days of $150+ net: up to 50% of the balance, capped at $2,000 on a 50K. The split is 90/10, and Topstep pays 100% of the first $10,000 in lifetime profits on its new dashboard. Payouts arrive the same day through Prop-to-Brokerage (requested by 12 PM CT) or take 1–10 business days by bank; ACH and wire cost $30.

One detail matters for how long you last: on a 50K Express Funded Account the Maximum Loss Limit locks at $0 once the balance reaches $2,000, and the first payout sets it to $0 even if you are not there yet. The balance you leave in the account becomes your whole cushion. The full breakdown, including the consistency path and live accounts, is in our guide to Topstep payout rules.

What Topstep reviews on Trustpilot say

On September 30, 2026, Topstep's Trustpilot score was 3.6 out of 5 from 14,875 reviews: 70% five-star and 19% one-star, with little in between. People either got paid or lost an account they felt they should not have.

Our read of the Topstep Trustpilot reviews:

ComplaintHolds up?
The Maximum Loss Limit ended an account on an intraday dipYes. It moves at the close but is watched in real time, and that surprises people who read “end-of-day” as “only checked at the close”
The platform froze during fast marketsPartly. Several recent reviews describe it; plan for it by trading smaller around news
A payout was deniedUsually no. Most denials trace to a written rule: a $140 “winning” day, or no profit since the last payout
Refused refund after failingRarely. The monthly fee buys the evaluation, not an outcome; read the refund terms before you pay
Support was slow or curtMixed. Five-star reviews often praise support speed

Is Topstep a scam? Nothing in the record supports that. A firm that was not paying would not sustain 70% five-star reviews at this volume. Compare it with the warning signs in prop firm red flags: published rules, published fees and a named payout process are the opposite of those.

Topstep vs Lucid on the rules that matter

Lucid Trading is the firm we are asked to compare most. On a 50K they look alike until you get to what happens after the first payout:

50K accountTopstepLucid Flex
Loss limit$2,000, trails the end-of-day high$2,000, trails the end-of-day high
Payout rule5 days of $150+5 days of $150+
Cap per payout$2,000 (standard path)$2,000
Split90/10 (100% of first $10K)90/10
Funded start size2 minis2 minis
Loss limit after it stops trailing$0 once a 50K balance reaches $2,000, and also after the first payout$50,100, once a close clears $52,100

Both move the loss limit only at the close. Topstep states that a breach is watched in real time, open trades included; Lucid’s drawdown page does not say either way, so plan as if an intraday touch counts at both. The practical difference is the lock: Topstep’s limit drops to a $0 balance after your first payout, so what you leave in the account is the whole cushion. Lucid’s locks $100 above the starting balance once you have built $2,100 of profit. Details in Lucid Trading Flex account rules, and for Topstep’s own evaluation, how to pass Topstep.

Who Topstep suits, and who should pick another firm

Topstep suits you if you trade small, want a firm with a long public record, and like fast payouts to a brokerage account. It suits you less if you plan to withdraw most of the balance early, since the limit sits at $0 after the first payout, or if you make your month in one big day rather than five modest ones.

Whichever firm you pick, the account usually ends the same way: one oversized trade on a bad day. MyTradingBuddy Ai checks your chart setup against the plan you wrote, including your size limit, before you enter. You still decide. See MyTradingBuddy plans.
